Tinnitus Management

Comprehensive approach to the evaluation & management of patients with tinnitus. While there is no single cure for tinnitus, research has shown that many patients can benefit from one or a combination of management options. Tinnitus management can provide many patients with relief and much needed control over the condition. A tinnitus management group class is offered quarterly.

Newborn Hearing Evaluations

Completed in office while the child is sleeping. Testing follows WA State EHDDI best practice testing protocol, and includes tympanometry, DP OAE, and diagnostic ABR.

Otoacoustic Emissions testing

Including DP OAE, TE OAE and spontaneous OAE

Cochlear Implants

Spokane Ear, Nose & Throat Clinic has been providing cochlear implant services since 1993. Cochlear implants are designed to provide sound to people with severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss in both ears. Typically the implant is presented as an option to patients who get either no benefit or very limited benefit from properly fitted hearing aids.

Electrocochleography (ECoG)

May be ordered as part of a balance or dizziness assessment.

Auditory Brianstem Response (ABR or BAER)

May be part of a comprehensive hearing evaluation.

Ear & Hearing

We treat a variety of ear and hearing conditions for all ages

Hearing Loss

Hearing is essential for our overall health. Hearing loss has been attributed to feelings of isolation, depression, fatigue, stress, social rejection, low self-esteem, anger, tension, stress, irritability, withdrawal from social situations, reduced alertness, impaired memory and reduced quality of life.

Dizziness & Vertigo

Dizziness is one of the leading health complaints in the United States, affecting an estimated nine million people annually. For those over the age of 70, it’s the top reason for a visit to the doctor’s office – not surprising, given the prevalence of falls in the elderly population.

Hearing Aid Styles

Although there are many types of hearing aids, the four major styles are completely-in-canal (CIC), in-the-canal (ITC), in-the-ear (ITE) and behind-the-ear (BTE). You and your audiologist can discuss which style is best for you in terms of appearance and functionality.

What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is described as an irritating buzzing, humming or ringing in the ears. What many don’t realize is that it is usually a symptom of a greater problem rather than a disease itself. The first step in treating tinnitus is to diagnose the underlying issue.

Ear Infections & Earache

Acute otitis media, more commonly referred to as an ear infection, is a bacterial or viral infection of the middle ear. The middle ear is the hollow space behind the eardrum; it contains three small bones that are instrumental in moving sound wave vibrations from the outer to the inner ear. Bacterial and viral infections lead to inflammation and fluid buildup, which is what causes an earache.

Choosing a Hearing Aid

Once you’ve seen an audiologist and been tested for hearing loss, your doctor may decide you could benefit from hearing aids. There are a wide variety of hearing aid manufacturers and types of hearing aids available, which may make the process of choosing a hearing aid seem overwhelming. That’s why our specialists are available to help you.

Hearing Aid Manufacturers

We work with the following manufacturers to provide you with a custom, first-rate solution for your hearing loss: Oticon, Phonak, ReSound, Widex, Cochlear, Earlens, Lyric, and Westone.

Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps are small, noncancerous growths that form on the lining of the nasal passages or sinuses. Small polyps may go unnoticed and require no treatment, but larger ones can obstruct the sinuses and lead to infections and breathing problems.

Allergy Treatment

Allergies are an exaggerated immune system response to a substance that is otherwise harmless. Identifying the trigger is necessary in order to formulate a treatment plan. This requires allergy testing. Your doctor will review your medical history, ask questions about your symptoms and administer either a skin or blood test. Once the allergen trigger is found, treatment can begin.

Balloon Sinuplasty

Chronic sinusitis is a widespread condition affecting 37 million Americans. This inflammation of the sinuses occurs when the sinus opening becomes blocked, preventing mucus from draining properly.

Sinusitis

A sinus infection, also called sinusitis, is inflammation and swelling of the tissues that line the sinuses. This interferes with normal mucus drainage, leading to breathing difficulties, pain and pressure. When the condition persists for 12 weeks or longer, it is considered chronic.

Allergies

Allergies, or allergic diseases, refer to the immune system’s hypersensitivity to something in one’s environment. Some allergies include hay fever, food allergies, dermatitis, allergic asthma and anaphylaxis. Allergy symptoms include red itchy eyes, swelling, rash, runny or stuffy nose, shortness of breath and itchy or plugged ears. Common allergens are pollens, grasses, foods, metals, insect bites or stings, medications and more.

Nasal & Sinus Surgery

We treat many nasal and sinus conditions. Most of these can be managed or cured using nonsurgical treatments. In some cases, though, our physicians may recommend surgical solutions. Whether or not you’ll require surgery depends entirely on your individual health and personal needs.

Voice and Sleep Disorders

We treat a variety of throat conditions for all ages

Tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is an inflammation of the tonsils that leads to swelling, sore throat and difficulty swallowing. It is usually the result of a viral or bacterial infection and tends to affect children more frequently than any other age group.

Laryngitis

Laryngitis is swelling and irritation of the larynx (voice box). It causes hoarseness and, in some cases, voice loss. It can be acute (short-lived) or chronic (long-lasting), but it is usually the result of a temporary viral infection or vocal strain, which clears up quickly. Persistent laryngitis that lasts longer than two weeks could be the sign of a serious condition and should be evaluated by a doctor.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a chronic condition characterized by pauses in breathing that occur repeatedly throughout the night. They may last anywhere from a few seconds to a couple of minutes and occur in conjunction with loud snoring. People with sleep apnea often feel tired during the day since their quality of sleep is poor.

Hoarseness

Hoarseness is an abnormally deep or harsh voice that may sound raspy, scratchy, breathy or strained. There may be changes in volume or pitch. It’s usually the result of irritation or injury to the vocal cords and can be caused by a number of different conditions

Voice Disorders

You may have a voice disorder if you have trouble controlling pitch, volume, tone or other voice qualities. Symptoms of voice disorders include quivering sound, hoarseness, choppiness, breathiness or unusual pitch. Other symptoms are physical, like feeling a lump in your throat when speaking, feeling tired in your throat or voice box and tenderness on the outside of your throat.

Snoring

As many as forty-five percent of adults report occasional snoring, but over twenty-five percent snore every night. Snoring occurs when there is an obstruction in air flow in the back of the mouth and nose. The sound we hear is the result of the tongue and upper throat vibrating against the soft palate and uvula during breathing.

Spokane ENT offers Inspire Hypoglossal Nerve Stimulator Placement.

Pediatric ENT

Pediatric Hearing Test

Hearing tests used on children vary slightly from those used on adults. Depending on the age of the child, objective tests must be used since young children cannot vocalize what they can and cannot hear. Pure-tone testing, auditory brainstem response evaluations and otoacoustic emissions are the most common testing methods for children.

Pediatric Ear & Hearing

Pediatric audiology is the study and treatment of hearing loss in infants, toddlers and children. Our experts evaluate and treat children of all developmental stages. Our goal is to detect and treat hearing loss and other ear-related disorders in children as early as possible. Since our team consists of both audiologists and ENTs, we can care for your child’s whole hearing health.

Pediatric Tonsils & Adenoids

The tonsils and adenoids are part of the lymphatic system and serve as defenders of the immune system, protecting your body by preventing germs and bacteria from entering through your mouth and nose. Occasionally, they will develop problems themselves, requiring the attention of an ENT specialist. Infection of the tonsils and adenoids are common childhood illness, striking those between the ages of 5 and 15 most often.

Pediatric Allergy

Allergy and sinus conditions are common in children, whose sinuses continue to develop well into the teen years. Allergy and sinus symptoms are similar, making a proper diagnosis a bit challenging. Symptoms of allergy and sinus conditions include runny nose, sneezing, stuffiness, coughing, sore throat, wheezing, headaches, snoring and itchy eyes and nose. When your child is diagnosed with allergies and avoiding the allergen trigger isn’t possible, treatment consists of a variety of medications or immunotherapy
